Itinerary

Day 1

Bagdogra → Phuentsholing

~160 km · 4–5 hrs · gateway to Bhutan

Travel

Arrive at Bagdogra Airport. Meet your driver and drive towards the border town of Phuentsholing (approx 160 km / 4–5 hrs).

Experience

The drive takes you through the scenic tea gardens of West Bengal. On arrival, check into your hotel and capture photos by the iconic Bhutan Gate.

Day 2

Phuentsholing → Thimphu

~165 km · 5–6 hrs · scenic mountain drive

Morning

Complete your immigration formalities at the Phuentsholing office (if not done online in advance).

Travel

Begin the uphill drive to Thimphu, the capital city (approx 165 km / 5–6 hrs). The route is incredibly scenic — waterfalls, mist and sweeping mountain views.

Evening

Check in to your hotel in Thimphu. Stroll around the Clock Tower Square and the local markets.

Day 3

Thimphu Sightseeing

Capital highlights

Morning

Visit Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point) — home to one of the largest sitting Buddha statues in the world, with a panoramic view across the entire Thimphu valley.

Afternoon

Head to the National Memorial Chorten and Simply Bhutan — a living museum where you can try the traditional Gho and Kira and taste local butter tea.

Evening

Explore the majestic Tashichho Dzong — a fortress that houses the government offices and looks stunning when lit up at night.

Day 4

Thimphu → Paro via Punakha

Dochula Pass & Punakha day-trip

Note

Today you'll explore Punakha but won't stay overnight — you'll continue straight to Paro by evening.

Morning

Leave early from Thimphu. Stop at the breathtaking Dochula Pass (3,100 m), famous for its 108 memorial chortens and views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

Afternoon

Reach Punakha and visit the stunning Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers. Walk across the nearby Punakha Suspension Bridge — one of the longest in Bhutan.

Evening

Drive directly from Punakha to Paro (approx 3.5–4 hrs). Check in to your Paro hotel and rest up for the big trek tomorrow.

Day 5

Paro — Tiger's Nest Hike

Taktsang Monastery

Morning

Wake up early for the highlight of the trip — the hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest). Perched on a cliff 900 m above the valley, the trek takes about 5–6 hours round-trip. Horses are available to rent for the uphill climb to the halfway point.

Evening

Reward yourself after the trek with a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath to soothe tired muscles. Relax at a cafe in Paro town.

Day 6

Paro → Phuentsholing

Sightseeing & return drive

Morning

Visit Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum of Bhutan. Stop at the Paro Airport View Point to watch planes navigate one of the world's most challenging runways.

Afternoon

Begin the journey back down towards the border town of Phuentsholing (approx 5 hrs).

Day 7

Phuentsholing → Bagdogra

Departure

Morning

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, check out and cross back into India.

Travel

Drive from Phuentsholing back to Bagdogra Airport (4–5 hrs) to catch your evening flight home.

Essentials

Before you pack.

  • Carry your original Passport or Voter ID — Aadhar Card is not accepted. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
  • For children, carry the original birth certificate. Age 1–4: no charge. Age 5–11: ₹14,000 per head.
  • Only original documents are valid — printed or downloaded copies are not allowed.
  • Pack winter clothes, hiking shoes, a day backpack, a reusable water bottle, slippers and personal medication.
  • Avoid small sachets of shampoo, soap, etc. Carry plastic packets back with you until the end of the trip.
  • Respect Bhutanese culture and lifestyle. Take photographs with permission.
